L’origine. En 2006, Yarol Poupaud et Caroline de Maigret ont créé le label Bonus Tracks, avec l’ambition affichée de faire différent. Leur devise : faire du Rock’n’roll en France oui, mais moderne et innovant. Mais pour innover, il ne s’agit pas de faire table rase du passé, mais plutôt de mélanger les genres et les époques.

La création. Au niveau des méthodes de création, c’est vers les petits labels indépendants américains des années 50 et 60 qu’ils se sont d’abord penchés. Ceux-ci enregistraient en live, rapidement, en gardant un côté brut et authentique. Le vinyle sortait dans la foulée et se vendait illico. C’est cette réactivité que recherche Bonus Tracks. Le label possède son propre studio d’enregistrement où les artistes se succèdent des nuits durant, imaginant des sessions folles, enregistrant beaucoup pour ne garder que le meilleur. Le concept est de capter la spontanéité d'un projet avant qu'il ne se dilue dans les arcanes de la production traditionnelle telle que la pratique les "majors".

La diffusion. Tout le monde le sait : en distribution physique, les labels indépendants doivent se battre pour être dans les rayons de la Fnac plus d'un mois. Les rayons disques rétrécissent à vue d’œil. C’est pour ça que Bonus Tracks vient de lancer une plateforme internet, où sortent toutes les productions Bonus Tracks Records, ainsi qu’une sélection d'artistes indépendants qui méritent d'exister sur le marché. Ce système permet une diffusion quasi-immédiate et mondiale des morceaux. Une fois inscrits sur la plateforme, les tracks se retrouvent également sur Itunes US, Japon ou même Chili. Cela permet aux artistes de rencontrer plus surement les publics ou communautés concernés par leurs œuvres, untel plaira aux folkeux suédois, l’autre aux punks japonais. Cette plateforme propose également des titres bonus gratuits, des photos et vidéos des artistes. Tout ce que l’on trouve habituellement dans un livret, voire plus.
Bonus Tracks est un label de résistants modernes, une structure à la fois autarcique et tournée vers le monde et ses évolutions musicales.

The origins Yarol Poupaud and Caroline de Maigret created the label Bonus Tracks Records in 2006 with the firm intention to do things differently. Their goal was simple and clear : to produce real rock’n’roll records in France, with a modern and innovative approach. But their idea of innovation doesn’t imply a complete denial of the past. Quite the opposite : they embrace the tried and true spirit of the past in order to project the label into the future.

The creation When it comes to creating music, Yarol and Caroline have chosen to follow the methods of the small US independent labels of the fifties and sixties. Back then, the unrestrained, simple and quick live recording of a band playing together, firing on all cylinders, was (and remains) the only way to record raw and authentic rock’n’roll. Once mastered, the vinyl was pressed instantly and the record was on the shelves within days. That kind of active and reactive, immediate approach is precisely what BTR aspires to. The recording studio owned by the label is constantly in session, with bands succeeding each other night and day, recording a lot in order to keep the best of their material. The main intention is to capture a band at its most spontaneous and fresh, before its style gets diluted by the kind of slick mainstream production imposed by major labels.

The distribution It’s no secret : for indie labels to have their records put on the shelves of the big chain record shops is a hopeless struggle. And even then, those records hardly stay more than a few weeks on those same shelves. Which are getting smaller and smaller as the video games are slowly taking over. So, rather than try to put up an impossible fight, BTR has launched a downloading platform on which all the label’s productions are available. The BTR site will also host a selection of independent artists who, the label feels, deserve their chance to be heard. This system allows an almost instant and worldwide distribution of the music produced by the label. Once they are uploaded on the platform, the songs are also instantly made available on iTunes all over the planet from the USA to Japan or Chile. This allows BTR’s artists to be heard by the audiences most likely to be interested in their work all over the world. That way, Japanese punk rockers, Swedish folkies or Scottish cowboys will all find something to like without having to hunt in the dark for it. The platform will also offer many free bonus tracks (which was inevitable, given the chosen name of the label), photos and videos of all the acts. The kind of things you used to find in the CD booklets, and more.

Essentially, what animates Bonus Tracks Records is the spirit of a modernist kind of resistance, self-contained, self-sufficient, in tune with the world and the future of music, constantly active, immediately reactive.
